That Angora Sweater Is Made With Horrifying Pain, Just For YOU.

Christmas is coming up and people flock to the stores for gifts to loved ones and maybe yourself. Or maybe you are out to find a warm hat, scarf or a new pair of gloves for the cold weather?

Maybe you are, (just like I was) unaware of what these Angora rabbits go through in their short life? Maybe you didn’t either know the cruelty involved? I found out and will share what I now know.

UntitledNinety percent of angora fur comes from China, where there are no penalties for the abuse of animals on farms and no standards to regulate the treatment of the animals. When you buy a sweater, hat, or other product that contains angora, the angora fur most likely originated in China, even if the finished product was assembled elsewhere. Rabbits are extremely clean by nature and in these farms they are kept in tiny, filthy cages, in their own waste and painful bleeding ulcers in their sensitive paws because of the cage wires.

When it’s time for them to get their fur cut, they are tied up under severe pain and stress. Often those who owns the farms simply rip out the fur from the tied up rabbit who screams in pain. Bleeding and crying and with no chance to flee… angora3It’s not any better from those rabbits that gets cut with sharp tools. Often they end up with bleeding wounds after they try to escape, that gets infected by by the filth they are surrounded with.
angora-fur-graphic-229x157After this terrifying and barbaric ordeal, which the rabbits endure every three months, many of them go into severe shock. After two to five years, those who have survived are hung upside down, their throats are slit, and their carcasses are sold to markets and restaurants. Many farmers kill male angoras at birth because they yield less wool than the females.

PETA released a undercover video of angora farms in China, and please watch. The screams from the rabbits will follow me for a very long time…

THAT is the life for these beautiful creatures. THAT is how they suffer just for people to have a ‘fancy’ sweater or expensive hat or scarf…

I will NEVER wear Angora, will you?

  1. In the video it shows German Angoras getting their fiber ripped out. But German Angoras don’t molt, so they should be sheared. And they need to be sheared, or else they’ll suffocate and die from their own overgrown fur. German Angoras produce the most fiber out of all the Angoras, so they are the Angora rabbit of choice for mass production. I don’t believe that all German Angoras are treated this badly in China. But if you love Angora knitwear and want to be safe than sorry, buy from your local hobbyists who gently and lovingly care for their rabbits. Hand spinning and hand knitting items from their beloved pets. The other Angora breeds molt, so they can be gently plucked or combed to harvest the fiber after the under coat has grown in. Angora rabbits are sweet and that’s a heartbreaking video. It’s not a reason to boycott all Angora, just boycott Angora from the inhumane factories.

  2. It’s insane how humans can be so cruel! Who are the animals here? When I was young, my sisters & I had rabbits for pets. They are quite intelligent! Dad built them outdoor pens to live in in the summer. The pens were on 4 ft stilts with barbed wire draped under the actual cage part, and the pens were in a chicken wire enclosure. One night I was awaken to some horrible high pitched noises. Dad ran outside while shouting at us girls to stay inside. In the morning we went out to find our rabbits hind legs were skinned to the bone. Apparently some dog(s) had broke into the pens and attempted to get our fuzzy family members and pull them through the barbed wire, but they only managed to get the legs before Dad ran out there. We had to put them all down that morning. If I close my eyes I can still hear those screams from my bedroom window. I have more respect for the dogs that hurt our rabbits than I do for these fools!!!

    • Oh my what a horrible memory and so sorry for your rabbits Angela! Dogs or other animals who does a thing like that have a reason behind it (for food mainly) but the ”people” who hurt animals are despicable and disgusting creeps that I wish no good for in life.

  3. Hi Cicci,
Your blog is inspirational. And this is a subject that is really close to my heart. I have started a petition to help stop this cruel practice and wondering if you are able to sign and share to help me get as many signatures as possible. Thank you so much! 🙂

    • You are right sadly, small animals are easily ‘forgotten’ in the world of animal cruelty and it’s sad since they suffer just as the bigger animals.. You are a good person for that! Thank you 🙂

  5. I do my absolute best to live by the rule, ‘if you can’t verify the source dont use it, buy it etc’ educate yourselves and make responsible decisions accordingly. There is no need for any creature to suffer in the production of consumer goods or food. Until we stand up for both human and animal rights as an educated world, these practices will continue in the name of profit.

  6. Don’t just swear on not wearing angora fur. OTHER ANIMALS SUFFER TOO. Swear on not wearing leather, or suede, or other kinds of fur. I know I do.

  7. Is there no kinder method that can be used to these beautiful animals? he present method is so cruel and should not be allowed. I would never wear Angora, just the thought of these poor animals suffering is shameful. Petition signed.

    • Thank you Irene! There are better methods and many who raise these rabbits (as pets) often brush and cut gently to then make things for themselves or sale in small scale. Sadly those farms don’t care about the rabbits, just the money they make.. 😦
