child-abuse-ningbo-china-28child-abuse-ningbo-china-29child-abuse-ningbo-china-30When the doctor was stitching up the child’s wounds, anaesthetic wasn’t used so recovery would be quicker. The child was strong throughout, never making a single whimper, or shedding a single tear.

child-abuse-ningbo-china-31child-abuse-ningbo-china-33The child’s experiences and strength moved the entire hospital, with everyone present shedding tears. A helpful ayi (auntie) dressed the child, and brought some bread and milk for the children to eat. An old grandmother said while crying: “The child is only five years old and has already met this hardship, and undergoing surgery without anaesthesia is something even adults could not endure without screaming. Yet this child did not even shed a tear. How could there be a father like this? The children’s live worse than dogs.”

Last update: November 10 progress: Due to the nature and extent of the children’s injuries, the relevant authorities contacted the local charity centre, and the children were sent there temporarily. Spokesman for the relevant authorities indicated that they would be cared for, and for the moment, were being removed from their father’s care for their own protection.

ningbo Google MapsLooking through these photos makes me sick. The reality that these children lived under, the father who said he hit them because he loved them. The incredible strength in these beautiful children after enduring years of torture in the hands of the one who is supposed to protect you.

This is the reality that many children live under, not only in China but in every country, every city, every town and the probability that you meet a beaten child or his or hers ‘torturer’ on the street, in the shops, the neighbour is huge.

When I was young and living in Sweden we had a neighbour who used to punish his children with looking them out if they behaved ‘wrong’ (in his eyes). Still remember the ice-cold winter morning when I was on my way to school and their little boy (about 1-2 years old) stood out on the steps, crying, banging the door dressed only in his diaper. I told a teacher and she called the police. What happened? Nothing, the father claimed the child had gone out and couldn’t get in again. I know different though because several years later  I met their daughter (she was about 15 now) and she told me what had happened in that house…
